Home Renovation: DIY or Hire a Pro?

Not all home renovations are created equal. Some are perfect for a do-it-yourself project, while others are better left to the pros. Knowing the difference can save you time, money and maybe even a few headaches.

The easiest home renovation projects usually include cosmetic work, such as painting, wallpapering, landscaping, upgrading outlet covers, redecorating, replacing doorknobs, and updating cabinet hardware. Other commonly recommended DIY projects include simple tiling jobs and installing new light fixtures or ceiling fans. Instruction manuals and online video tutorials are typically straightforward and easy to follow for these tasks.

However, industry experts say certain reno projects should always be left to professionals. Electrical work, plumbing jobs and demolition should be done by licensed pros due to the complexity of the projects and the risk of personal injury. Window replacements, intricate tile work and cabinet installation are often much more difficult than people anticipate and can be problematic if done incorrectly.

When considering whether you should DIY or hire a professional, ask yourself the following questions.

  • What is your skill level, physical ability, experience, and willingness to learn?
  • How much time do you have?
  • What’s your budget?
  • Do you believe a professional would give you the end result you’re looking for?
  • Has your house been renovated before? If so, was it done well? Is it possible it needs more updates than you anticipate?
  • How old is the structure or material you are working with?
  • Will the renovation add substantial resale value to your home? Would hiring a professional be worth it to maximize value?

Make Your Home the Gathering Spot

Entertain friends and family with a stylish and versatile home drink station.

Pick a space. Transform an empty alcove, basement corner or bare living room wall into a one-of-a-kind hospitality zone. Add a work surface, such as a vintage secretary, an unused buffet table or an empty bookshelf. If space is limited, designate a small portion of your kitchen counter as a beverage corner or set up a cart to use as a mobile lounge.

Make it yours. Add personality with fun design touches. If possible, install shelving to display glassware. A mirror, artwork, subtle lighting, and silk or live plants can give your setup its own distinct vibe. Add pops of color with a serving tray, rug or custom signage. With a little creativity, you can design a versatile entertainment space.

Organize Your Fridge

We use our refrigerators every day, which can make it easy for them to become a muddled mess. Use these tips and tricks to keep your fridge clean and streamlined.

Clean and sort. Start with a clean canvas. Take everything out of your refrigerator, including removable drawers and shelves. Soak components in warm, soapy water while you wipe down the interior. Sort food items as you put them back, and be sure to check expiration dates and toss anything you know you won’t eat.

Organize intentionally. Designate areas in your refrigerator for specific items. Place leftovers or food you want to eat soon at eye level to keep them top-of-mind. Store items that spoil quickly, such as meats or fish, in the coldest part of your fridge to keep them fresher longer.

Maximize efficiency. Use bins or baskets to group items like beverages or healthy snacks. Keep a dry-erase board near your refrigerator to track what you have on hand as well as what you’ll need to buy on your next grocery trip.

Dog-Friendly Landscaping

Your yard may be yours, but let’s face it — it’s your dog’s kingdom, too. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep their realm safe.

  • DO protect your furry friend from the elements. Add a structure to provide shade or shelter.
  • DON’T use toxic chemicals. Instead, look for pet-friendly fertilizers and pesticides.
  • DO cater your landscaping to your dog. If your pet likes to dig in dirt or mulch, consider alternatives like river rock or pea gravel.
  • DON’T plant flowers or greenery that could be harmful. Choose pet-friendly options like blueberries and strawberries, which are healthy for dogs.
  • DO give your dog space. Create an area specifically for your dog, and if you have a garden, consider fencing it off.
